Have you ever heard of the name ”Great Walks”?
It is a set of 11 officially designated tracks among New Zealand’s many hiking trails, recognized by the Department of Conservation(DOC).These hiking trails are known for offering stunning natural landscapes, allowing hikers to experience the country’s most beautiful environments.
There are 3 trails on the North Island (one of which is a paddling trip), and 8 trails on the South Island.
Hikers from all over the world visit to walk the Great Walks.
I have decided to complete South Island’s Great Walks.
I will briefly introduce the trails.
・Abel Tasman Coast Track
Total length:about 60Km
The trail, with its beautiful coastline, golden beaches, clear seas, and rich natural environment, is one of the most popular courses visited by hikers throughout the year.
・Heaphy Track
Total length:about 80Km
The trail, with magnificent natural landscapes and diverse terrains where you may be able to spot wild kiwi birds.
・Paparoa Track
Total length:about 55Km
The trail, with breathtaking mountain landscapes, lush tropical rainforests, limestone gorges, and stunning views of the West Coast.
・Rakiura Track
Total length:about 32Km
The trail, with located on Stewart Island, south of the South Island, where you can immerse yourself in the quiet natural beauty and pristine landscapes of New Zealand, and see many endemic species, including the kiwi.
・Milford Track
Total length:about 55Km
Known as the “world’s finest walk,” this trail passes through Fiordland National Park and offers stunning landscapes and a variety of natural environments to enjoy.
・Kepler Track
Total length:about 60Km
The trail, with allows you to experience diverse terrains, including majestic landscapes around Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri, mountains, forests, and alpine areas.
・Hump Ridge Track
Total length:about 60Km
A new trail designated as a Great Walks in October 2023, offers a unique route where you can enjoy stunning coastal lines, forests, and the grandeur of the Alps.
・Routeburn Track
Total length:about 33Km
A trail where you can enjoy magnificent mountain ranges, lakes, waterfalls, and forests.
I am going to complete the Great Walks over the course of two months!!
