Trip preparations

・Booking Great Walks
We have to book Hut or campsite.
If we don’t have a reservation, we can’t walk.
And then it’s the most hard for Great Walks.
It depends on the trail, but the maximum is 50 people per day.
So, popular trail is rapidly full book like Milford trail.
But you don’t have to give up. Because cancellations may occur.
Actually I got a book that way.
It’s easy how to book Great Walks.
Great Walks has official website.

We can choose trail, date, nights and headcount.

We can check availability.
it’s a Milford track availability, full book…

If we have vacant, we can choose date.
And then, proceed with the booking and payment.

If we don’t know the itinerary, we can refer to the itinerary provided on the booking page.
Please make sure to prepare proper equipment for staying overnight in the mountains before you depart.

・preparation of food and equipment

Christchurch, where I live, is the largest city on the South Island.
When leaving Christchurch, prices tend to get higher, so I try to stock up on non-perishable items as much as possible.
As I’ll mainly be staying at campsites, I bought items like a portable charger and a camping gas stove.
There are plenty of campsites in New Zealand, and most of them are managed by the DOC . Depending on the campsite, some are free while others require a fee. In general, reservations are necessary.
The cost per night ranges from $0 to $15, but a season pass is also available. If you plan to stay at campsites for an extended period, the season pass is a cost-effective option!
In addition, protecting yourself from UV rays and sandflies is essential! New Zealand’s UV rays are said to be seven times stronger than in Japan, leading to a higher incidence of skin cancer. UV protection is a must!
Sandflies are a type of fly, and their bites cause much more severe itching and pain compared to mosquito bites. In New Zealand, you can find creams that combine sunscreen with sandfly protection, as well as insect repellents effective against sandflies.
While the tramping courses do have water sources, the water often needs to be boiled. To avoid this hassle, I also purchased a portable water filter that makes water safe to drink without boiling.
With all preparations complete, I’m now ready to embark on my journey to explore the Great Walks!
